Three years removed from their debut LP If You Feel Alone at Parties—which an occasionally trustworthy outlet described as “a lo-fi, rhythm-and-blues-and-indie, heartbreaking mini-epic about growing up and out and over while blossoming weirdly anew and expressing genuine poetic thought every time you hear it”—Memphis-based songwriter Josh Shaw’s Blvck Hippie project is back with their follow-up album Basketball Camp. Slated for a June 14 release, this latest album carries that same sonic palette over to a new set of songs and the insecurities that guide them with a focus on many of those anxieties’ roots. “I wanted to write a record that I needed to hear in high school,” Shaw shared with the news of the upcoming release last month.

Today we’re getting the second taste of this new release with the blown-out slow-dance tune “Silent Disco,” which pairs Shaw’s wavering vocals and endearingly demo-esque instrumental with uniquely lovelorn lyrics. “This is the only love song I’ve ever written and it’s about meeting my girlfriend at an AJJ show that I decided to go to at the last minute with a friend from college,” they share. “I wanted the song to feel nostalgic and my main sonic reference was the Curious George theme song from the ’80s and the thought of my childhood living room.”

Check out the track below, and anticipate Basketball Camp’s arrival on June 14 via The Record Machine.
